A passkey can ask for device verification without a password

Yes. A passkey may request device verification, such as an authenticator PIN or biometric check, even though no website password is being entered. This verifies the user to the authenticator; it is not the same as giving a library or reading account its password.

What the device check means

In a hypothetical browser-owned library prompt, the browser may ask you to verify yourself to the authenticator before using a stored passkey. Authenticator user verification can use a PIN or biometrics, and a website may require that verification for the operation to succeed. Learn about authenticator user verification.

Authenticator verification and a library password serve different purposes. Successful verification does not establish that every claim made by the requesting website is genuine.

How to read a hypothetical library prompt

Imagine you open a reading account and a browser-owned prompt appears before access is completed. It might show a passkey choice and then request device verification. Verification belongs in the genuine system or authenticator flow, which need not be the device lock screen. Do not type its PIN into an ordinary webpage or chat box.

Do not send biometric data, PINs, passcodes, or passwords to another person. A page’s appearance alone cannot authenticate the prompt. Check which application or browser owns the dialogue and whether you began the action intentionally.

When cancelling is the better choice

Cancel an unexpected request, especially if it appears after clicking an unrelated button, asks for verification in a normal page field, or arrives when you did not start a passkey action. Cancellation does not establish that an account is blocked; it simply stops that operation.

For a hypothetical library account, return only through a route you already recognise and read the next request separately. Keep the device verification and the website password as distinct categories: one unlocks a local authenticator action, while the other is a website credential.
