If you have already added a passkey or security key, an “already registered” message during setup can indicate a repeated registration rather than failed sign-in. Do not delete the working key or buy another one simply because adding it again was rejected.
Registration and sign-in are different actions
Registration creates a new credential for an account. Sign-in uses a credential that is already stored and recognised. If you choose an “Add passkey” or “Register key” option again, the service may reject the attempt because that authenticator is already linked to the account.
WebAuthn creation settings can include an exclusion list designed to stop a credential from being created again on an authenticator already registered for that account. This is one reason a duplicate-registration message can appear even when ordinary sign-in would still work. Read the MDN explanation of credential creation options.
What to do after the message
Record the preceding action: adding a key, signing in, or choosing an account. Return to the intended task. If you meant to enter the account, leave the setup screen and select its recognised passkey or security-key sign-in option instead.
Hypothetical example: in a library account, a reader adds a security key successfully on Monday. On Tuesday, they open “Add another key” and receive “already registered”. That does not by itself show that Monday’s key stopped working. The appropriate next step is to try the account’s normal sign-in path, not to remove the existing key.
Do not overread every rejection
The exact wording and preceding action matter. Do not diagnose an unfamiliar rejection from the word registered alone.
Keep the non-secret message exactly as shown, without recording passwords, PINs, recovery codes, or private account details. Successful normal sign-in would show that access still works, not explain every earlier error. If normal sign-in also fails, use the service’s ordinary account-recovery or support route; deleting a working credential is not a necessary first response.
